“The less pigment you have in the skin, the higher your risk of getting skin cancer and prematurely aging,” says Tanzi, noting that “if a blond-haired, blue-eyed woman were to get burned in 10 minutes without any sunscreen, using SPF 15 will give her 15 times the protection; in theory, she would burn in 150 minutes instead of 10.”

“Sun exposure through the years can cause those with darker complexions to develop uneven skin tone,” says Tanzi. “This discoloration over time is a big issue for women of color—once that blotchiness sets in, it’s really difficult to treat.”
“Alpha-hydroxy acid peels are great because they exfoliate the skin and help reduce excess pigmentation,” says Chapas, “but they also make skin more sensitive to the sun, which is another reason to wear SPF in your moisturizer and makeup.”
